Visit Malaysia in 2007…

…(2008 may be too late!)

Experience the real Malaysia…

Beneath the gleaming skyline of Kuala Lumpur City Centre just a stones throw form the opulent glass & steel of the Petronas Towers you can find another Malaysia…

A Malaysia not often experienced by tourists. Be among the first (& possibly the last) to expereince the charm of “Kampung” life without having to leave the convenience of the city .

Escape the noise & pace of KLCC & take a relaxing stroll thorough Kampung Berembang. Berembang is (or rather we should say was) one of Kaula Lumpurs few remaining squatted village established in the 1960’s by urban pioneers encouraged to ‘reclaim the land’ by the Malaysian Government. In these Kampungs strong communities have developed a heart in the city in stark contrast to the commercial & soul-less developments much heralded as totems to Malaysia’s economic development.

But you better be fast…

Residents in Kampung are the latest victims of the Selangor state government’s 2005 “Zero Squatter” policy. The policy has destroyed homes of urban pioneers without providing alternative housing. In the last six months the villagers have been eradicated from their homes 5 times. The Kampung has been fenced off leaving villagers with no choice but to camp on the side of the road.

Visit Kampung Berembang in 2007!

Experience the thrill of being manhandelled by police & hired thugs as developers bulldoze the kampung to make way for luxury apartments. You may even be lucky enough to spend a night in a Selangor jail!

It’s not to late…

Kampung Residents continue to fight for their rights & are determined to save their homes. Court cases are ongoing.

Project Kampung Seni is a project run by Lost Generation, Food Not Bombs, & other individuals & works with the residents of Kampung to document their struggle.
